Why a Metal Plate Alone Is Not a Recovery Plan
Metal seed backups solve durability but leave heirs without context. What a complete readiness file adds.
A client arrived last month with a beautifully engraved metal plate stored in a fireproof safe. The engraving was legible, the words were correct, and the plate had survived a house move without damage. Yet when we asked which wallet software and derivation path the plate belonged to, neither the client nor their spouse could answer.
This is the most common gap we see in verification sessions: durable backup, zero context.
What the plate does well
Metal backups resist fire, water, and the slow decay of ink on paper. For long-term seed storage, they are among the best physical formats available. We recommend them frequently and help clients document their location in the backup location map section of a readiness file.
What the plate cannot do
A metal plate stores words. It does not store:
- Which hardware wallet or software wallet generated those words
- Whether a passphrase (25th word) is in use
- Which derivation path corresponds to which account
- Who is authorised to use the backup and under what circumstances
- What to do in the first hours after an emergency
Without this context, an heir holding a correct seed phrase may still recover zero funds — or recover funds to an address the family did not intend to use.
The minimum context layer
At Weblagooncore, we ask every client to document five elements alongside any physical backup:
- Wallet make and model at time of backup creation
- Firmware version (for hardware wallets)
- Derivation path standard (e.g., BIP44/49/84) and account index
- Passphrase status — yes or no, and where the passphrase record lives if yes
- Date the backup was last verified as readable
These five lines take ten minutes to complete during a session and can save weeks of forensic guesswork later.
When to re-verify
We suggest testing backup readability annually. Metal plates can corrode at contact points; paper inside sealed envelopes can stick. A verification session costs less than a single hour of professional recovery assistance — and infinitely less than an unrecoverable loss.
